Benny Bee's Busy Day
Benny Bee thinks his job is small — until he learns how important bees are for flowers and food.
Benny Bee buzzed out of the hive just as the sun peeked over the meadow. He had one job today: visit flowers and collect sweet nectar.
"It is such a small job," Benny sighed. "The queen is important. The builders are important. I just fly around."
Benny landed on a bright yellow sunflower. He sipped the nectar with his long, straw-like tongue. Yellow dust called pollen stuck to his fuzzy legs.
Then he flew to the next sunflower. Some of the pollen fell off his legs and onto the new flower.
"Thank you, Benny!" said the sunflower.
Benny was surprised. "Thank me? For what?"
"When you carry pollen from flower to flower, you help us make seeds," the sunflower explained. "Seeds grow into new flowers. Without bees, there would be fewer flowers — and fewer apples, strawberries and pumpkins too!"
Benny's wings buzzed with excitement. He zoomed to the apple tree, the strawberry patch and the pumpkin vines. At each stop, he left a little pollen behind.
By sunset, Benny was tired but proud. Back at the hive, he told everyone, "My job is not small at all! Bees help feed the whole world!"
The other bees did a happy waggle dance. That is how bees say, "Great job!"
That night, Benny dreamed of flowers — thousands of them, blooming everywhere, all because of busy little bees.
