Mia wanted to paint a rainbow for her grandma's birthday. But when she opened her paint box, there were only three colors: RED, YELLOW and BLUE.

"Oh no," said Mia. "A rainbow needs lots of colors!"

Her big brother Sam peeked over her shoulder. "Those are the primary colors," he said. "You can make almost any color by mixing them. It's like magic!"

Mia dipped her brush in red, then in yellow, and swirled them together. The colors twisted and blended and turned... ORANGE! "Whoa!"

Next she mixed yellow and blue. Swirl, swirl... GREEN! "Like grass!"

Then she mixed blue and red. Swirl, swirl... PURPLE! "Like grapes!"

"Orange, green and purple are called secondary colors," said Sam. "You made them yourself."

Mia painted a big arch of red. Then orange. Then yellow. Then green. Then blue. Then purple. "It's a whole rainbow β€” from just three colors!"

Then she had an idea. She mixed a tiny bit of red with lots of white. "Pink!" she giggled, and painted fluffy pink clouds.

At the party, Grandma held up the painting. "Mia, this is the most beautiful rainbow I've ever seen. Where did you get all these colors?"

Mia grinned. "I made them β€” with a little color magic!"
