Penny the panda loved bamboo more than anything. She ate bamboo for breakfast, bamboo for lunch and bamboo for dinner.

Pandas eat a LOT of bamboo β€” sometimes for more than half the day!

One morning, Penny climbed over a hill and gasped. There, in a hidden valley, was the biggest, greenest patch of bamboo she had ever seen.

"It's all mine!" she cheered. She built a little fence of sticks around it and hung a sign: PENNY'S BAMBOO. KEEP OUT.

Penny munched and munched. But after a while, she noticed something. It was very quiet. There was no one to talk to. No one to laugh with.

Over the hill, she could hear her friends. Their bamboo patch had dried up in the hot summer. "I'm so hungry," sighed little Bao. "Me too," said Grandpa Lin.

Penny looked at her enormous patch. There was far more than one panda could ever eat.

She took down her sign. She knocked down her fence. Then she ran over the hill. "Everyone! Come with me! There's plenty for all of us!"

That evening, the whole family of pandas sat together in the hidden valley, crunching bamboo and telling stories under the moon.

Penny had less bamboo than before. But she felt much, much fuller.
