Max and Theo were walking through the forest. "We are best friends," said Max. "If anything happens, we will stick together."

Just then, a big brown bear stepped out from behind the trees!

Max ran to the nearest tree and climbed up fast, all by himself. He didn't even look back.

Theo could not climb that high. He remembered something his grandma had told him, so he lay down very still on the ground and held his breath.

The bear came close. It sniffed Theo's hair. It sniffed his ear. Theo did not move a muscle.

At last, the bear lost interest and lumbered back into the forest.

Max climbed down, laughing nervously. "Wow, that was close! It looked like the bear whispered something in your ear. What did it say?"

Theo stood up and brushed off his clothes. "The bear said, 'Be careful of a friend who leaves you behind when there is trouble.'"

Max's face turned red. "I'm sorry, Theo," he said. "I was scared, and I only thought about myself. Next time, I'll help you."

Theo thought about it, then nodded. Real friends make mistakes too β€” but they learn from them.

(In real life, playing dead is not always safe. If you ever see a bear, stay calm, stay with your grown-up, back away slowly, and follow what park rangers teach.)
