The Library Book Disaster

Jonah spills juice all over a library book. Hiding it seems easier than telling the truth — at first.

It happened so fast. Jonah was reading his library book at breakfast — The Secret World of Octopuses — when his elbow bumped his glass. Grape juice splashed across three whole pages.

He grabbed a napkin and dabbed at it, but that only made it worse. The pages were purple and wrinkly, and one of the best pictures — an octopus squeezing through a tiny hole — was completely ruined.

The book was due on Friday.

Jonah's stomach twisted. Mrs. Abbott, the school librarian, loved her books. She had a sign above the desk that said: Treat every book like a friend.

Maybe I could just slide it into the return box, Jonah thought. Nobody would know it was me.

On Wednesday, he tried to forget about it. But at recess, he couldn't concentrate on the game. At lunch, he wasn't hungry. That night, he dreamed that a giant purple octopus was chasing him down the hallway, waving the book with all eight arms.

On Thursday, his older sister, Priya, found him staring at the book on his bed. "What happened to that?"

Jonah told her everything. "If I tell Mrs. Abbott, she'll be so mad. Maybe I'll have to pay for it. Maybe I won't be allowed to borrow books anymore."

Priya sat down next to him. "Maybe," she said. "But how do you feel right now, keeping it a secret?"

Jonah thought about it. "Terrible. Like I swallowed a rock."

"Sometimes telling the truth feels scary for one minute," Priya said. "But hiding it can feel bad for a long, long time."

On Friday morning, Jonah walked up to the library desk. His hands were shaking. He put the book down and opened it to the purple pages.

"Mrs. Abbott, I spilled juice on this book. I'm really sorry. It was an accident, but it was my fault."

Mrs. Abbott looked at the pages for a long moment. Then she looked at Jonah. "Thank you for telling me," she said. "That took courage. Do you know how many damaged books I find in the return box with no name on them?"

Jonah shook his head.

"Lots," she said. "And I always wonder who did it. But I never wonder about the people who tell me."

Together they figured out a plan. Jonah would use his birthday money to help buy a new copy. And until it arrived, he could help Mrs. Abbott at lunchtime, fixing torn pages with special tape.

He ended up loving it so much that he became an official Library Helper. And every time he taped a torn page back together, the rock in his stomach felt a little lighter, until one day it was gone completely.
