For her ninth birthday, Nora got something she had wanted for years: a real telescope. It was purple, with three long legs and a round glass lens that could see far, far away.

That night, she and Grandpa carried it to the top of the hill behind their house, away from the bright city lights.

"Where do I start?" Nora asked, looking at the thousands of twinkling dots.

"Start with the Moon," Grandpa said. "It's our closest neighbor in space."

Nora pointed the telescope and gasped. The Moon wasn't smooth at all. It was covered in round holes called craters, made long ago when space rocks crashed into it.

Next, Grandpa helped her find a bright dot that didn't twinkle. "Stars twinkle," he said. "Planets usually don't. That's Jupiter."

Through the lens, Nora saw a tiny striped ball with four little dots beside it. "Those are Jupiter's biggest moons," said Grandpa. "A scientist named Galileo saw them more than four hundred years ago."

Then Grandpa showed her how to find pictures in the stars, called constellations. "Those seven stars make the Big Dipper. It looks like a giant spoon."

Nora traced it with her finger. "People have been looking at the same stars for thousands of years."

"That's right," said Grandpa. "Sailors used them to find their way. Farmers used them to know when to plant. And every culture told its own stories about them."

Nora lay on her back on the cool grass. "I want to learn all their stories," she said.

Grandpa smiled. "Then you'll never run out of things to discover. The sky is the biggest book in the world."
