Jelly and the Glowing Sea
Jelly the jellyfish drifts into the deep, dark sea and discovers creatures that make their own light.
Jelly the jellyfish didn't swim like a fish. She drifted. She pulsed her soft umbrella body — squish, squish — and let the ocean carry her.
One day, a strong current pulled her down, down, down into the deep sea. The water grew colder. The light faded. Soon, it was darker than the darkest night.
"Hello?" Jelly called. "Is anyone down here?"
Blink. A tiny blue light flickered. Blink, blink. Then a green one. Then a whole swirl of sparkles!
"Welcome to the deep!" said a little fish with a glowing light dangling in front of its face. "I'm Lumi. Down here, lots of us make our own light."
"Your own light?" said Jelly. "How?"
"Our bodies make it, like fireflies," said Lumi. "It's called bioluminescence. We use it to find food, find friends and say hello."
A shrimp flashed a blue hello. A squid rippled with purple lights. The deep sea looked like a party full of floating stars.
Then Jelly noticed something amazing. She was glowing too! Soft pink light shimmered along her tentacles.
"You're one of us!" laughed Lumi.
When the current finally carried Jelly back up to the sunny water, she told all her friends about the glowing sea. "It's dark down there," she said, "but it's never lonely."
