Ollie Owl Can't Sleep
All the animals are going to bed, but Ollie Owl is wide awake. Why?
The sun was setting over Whispering Woods. The sky turned pink, then orange, then purple.
"Goodnight!" chirped the robins as they tucked into their nest.
"Goodnight!" chattered the squirrels, curling up in their tree hole.
"Goodnight!" buzzed the bees, flying home to their hive.
But Ollie the Owl was wide awake. His big round eyes were open. His feathers were fluffed. He felt ready to play!
"Mama," said Ollie, "why can't I sleep when everyone else does?"
Mama Owl smiled. "Because we are owls, Ollie. We are nocturnal. That means we sleep in the day and are awake at night."
"Oh!" said Ollie. He looked around. The moon was rising. The stars were twinkling. Fireflies blinked in the grass. A family of raccoons waddled by, and a bat swooped through the sky.
"The night is full of friends!" said Ollie.
Ollie spent the whole night exploring with his mama. He saw the moon, counted the stars and hooted hello to the bats.
When the sun came up, Ollie finally yawned a great big yawn. "Good morning, everybody," he mumbled. "I mean... goodnight!"
And Ollie snuggled into his cozy tree and fell fast asleep.
