High in the sky, the North Wind and the Sun were having an argument.

"I am the strongest," howled the Wind. "I can bend trees and push ships across the sea!"

"Let's have a contest," said the Sun gently. "Do you see that traveler walking down the road in his coat? Whoever can get him to take off his coat is the strongest."

The Wind went first. He blew a cold blast. WHOOSH! The traveler pulled his coat tighter.

The Wind blew harder. WHOOOOSH! Leaves flew and branches shook. The traveler buttoned every button and held his coat closed with both hands.

The Wind blew with all his might until he was out of breath. But the coat stayed on.

"My turn," said the Sun. She came out from behind a cloud and shone softly and warmly.

The traveler loosened his collar. The Sun shone a little warmer. The traveler unbuttoned his coat.

The Sun shone warmer still. "Phew, what a lovely day," said the traveler. He took off his coat and sat down in the shade of a tree.

The Wind had to admit it. "You won," he puffed. "Gentle warmth worked better than all my blowing."
