Crunch, crunch, crunch! Autumn had come to Maple Hill, and the ground was covered with leaves β€” red ones, orange ones and yellow ones.

"I am going to make the biggest leaf pile ever!" said Pip the squirrel.

Pip swept leaves with her bushy tail. Swish, swish! She carried leaves in her paws. She rolled leaves into a ball.

The pile grew taller than a mushroom. Taller than a log. Taller than Pip!

"Ready... set... JUMP!" Pip leaped into the middle. WHOOSH! Leaves flew everywhere.

Then Pip heard a sound. "Zzzzz... snorrrre..."

The pile was snoring!

Pip dug down, down, down. At the very bottom was a round, prickly ball. It uncurled and yawned. It was Hazel the hedgehog!

"Oh, Hazel! I'm sorry I woke you," said Pip.

"That's all right," said Hazel sleepily. "Leaf piles are the coziest place for a nap. Soon I will sleep all winter long."

So Pip and Hazel built a new pile together β€” a soft, warm one under the old oak tree, just right for a long winter sleep.

"Good night, Hazel," Pip whispered. "See you in the spring!"
