The Gingerbread Friend
A gingerbread cookie jumps off the tray — but instead of running away, he runs to help.
Grandma and Leo baked cookies on a snowy afternoon. They mixed the dough, rolled it flat and cut out a gingerbread shape.
Leo added two raisin eyes, a smile of icing and three candy buttons: red, green, red.
When the timer went ding, Grandma opened the oven. And out hopped the gingerbread cookie! "Hello!" he said. "I'm Ginger!"
Leo gasped. "Are you going to run away? Like in the story?"
Ginger shook his head. "Why would I run away? I want to help!"
So Ginger helped. He carried sprinkles to decorate the cupcakes. He found Grandma's lost glasses behind the flour jar. He even helped the cat get down from the top of the fridge.
Then Ginger had an idea. "Let's bake cookies for the neighbors!"
They made cookies for Mrs. Lee next door, for the mail carrier, and for the family down the street with the new baby.
Everyone smiled when they opened the door. "Thank you! What a lovely surprise!"
That night, Ginger sat on the windowsill watching the snow. "Running away sounds lonely," he said. "Staying and helping is much more fun."
